Mental Health Awareness week

This video is a short, personal message about mental health awareness and the importance of checking in with ourselves and others.

Mental health is something everyone has, just like physical health. However there is a difference between Mental Health and Mental Illness.

Term

Meaning

Mental health

Your overall emotional and psychological wellbeing

Mental illness

Specific diagnosed conditions like depression or schizophrenia

Mental health exists on a spectrum — people can experience both good and bad periods mentally, even without a diagnosed illness.

Personal Experience

I have struggleg with depression and recently my antidepressant medication had to change because it conflicted with my cancer treatment.

What affected me most recently wasn’t just one issue, but a combination of:

  • Cancer

  • Menopause

  • Being physically ill with a cold

  • Emotional exhaustion from everything piling up

Mental health challenges can affect anyone, even people who appear cheerful on the outside.

Important Advice

  • Don’t assume someone is okay because they look happy

  • Ask people how they’re really doing

  • Be willing to genuinely listen

  • Talk to trusted friends or family

  • Contact support organizations like the Samaritans

  • Avoid suffering silently

Practical Tips for Improving Mental Health

Here are some simple coping strategies that helped me personally:

  • Walking in nature to clear the mind

  • Slow breathing exercises to reduce anxiety

  • Meditation

  • Yoga or Pilates

  • Activities that calm the mind and shift focus away from worries

Final Takeaway

“You don’t have to be brave. You don’t have to be strong. Just be honest. Be yourself.”
